The Arlington County Board approved Edgemoor Real Estate Services' plan to transform the existing Arlington Mill Community Center into a mixed-use development by adding homes, shops, a public plaza and underground parking to expanded community center facilities.
The Board's action is the culmination of several months of community planning. The expansion of the community center will allow the County to provide a wider-range of recreation, educational, cultural, and health & fitness programs and services. Additionally, an exterior plaza will accommodate community events such as farmers markets, craft shows and multi-cultural festivals.
The plan also calls for a 159-unit residential building on the northern portion of the site and a six-story mixed-use building on the southern portion that will house the community center, ground-floor retail and 33 residential units. The Board approved a use permit under the Columbia Pike Form Based Code. The mixed use community center will have a Silver LEED™ Certification. The residences will achieve an Earthcraft Certification.
Edgemoor Real Estate Services, under the name of Public Private Alliances, has been partnering with Arlington County since award of the Project in July 2007 to develop, design, build, and finance the mixed-use development. The Public Private Alliances team is comprised of Edgemoor Real Estate Services, a leader in public-private partnership development and construction; Davis Carter Scott, a Virginia-based full-service architectural firm; Clark Builders Group, one of the area's largest residential contractors; Lewis Scully Gionet, an East Coast based landscape architecture group, and VIKA for civil engineering and planning.
